How I came to run a concrete crew
I pushed wheelbarrows on concrete crews every summer through school, and I never really stopped. By 2017 I'd learned enough on other people's jobs to want my own, so I opened Caliber Chesterfield Concrete Company here in Chesterfield. We're known for driveways, patios and steps that drain and hold up, and for the footings and foundations nobody sees but every house depends on.
Most of our calls come from homeowners, with some builders and business owners mixed in. What I care about most is what goes under the concrete, the packed ground the slab sits on that we call the subgrade. Nobody admires a good base. Everybody notices a bad one sooner or later, usually as a crack or a sunken corner. I'd rather tell you a job isn't worth doing than sell you one that won't last. You can see the rest of the concrete work we do on our home page.
What you get when we pour your concrete
These are the parts of how we work that you'll actually notice, from the day I look at your job to the day the forms come off.
The person who bids it works the pour
I come out to look at your job, I write the estimate, and I'm on the pour with the crew. That way what you agreed to is what gets built, and you're not explaining it all over again to somebody new.
We spend on what you won't see
The base, the mix and where the water goes decide how a driveway or patio holds up, so that's where our effort goes, along with control joints, the cuts that give the slab a planned place to crack instead of a random one. If a budget needs trimming, I'll trim the finish before the base, because a nice surface on soft ground cracks anyway.
Straight answers, in writing
Your estimate comes in writing with what's in the price and what isn't, so you can lay it next to other bids and compare. If a cheaper fix will do the job, I'll tell you, even when that means less work for us.
What to expect from first call to finished slab
Here's how a job runs with us, from your first call to the day you can use the new concrete. The schedule mostly turns on permit approvals, the weather and the cure time.
Call or send the form
Call (636) 237-0079 or fill out our contact form and tell us what's going on with your driveway, patio or slab. We reply within one business day to set a time to come out.
I look at the job
I come out myself and look at the ground, the old concrete and where the water runs. The estimate is free with no obligation, and the price mostly turns on size, base work, access and finish.
We line up the permits
We find out which offices your address answers to and handle the permit paperwork with you. In Chesterfield the city's zoning sign-off goes to St. Louis County for the permit, and only then do we set a pour date.
We prep, form and pour
A small crew I work alongside digs out and packs the base, sets the forms and pours. Then the concrete needs time to cure, the wait while it hardens, and I'll tell you when it's ready to walk and drive on.
